G Vivian (K.I.A.)

 
Gilbert was a salesman on the Fish Dock for Messrs Pickering and Haldane before enlisting. He joined as a private soldier and was quickly promoted to a corporal of the 4th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment. A quote in the the Hull Daily Mail 25th July 1916 "on one occasion a sergeant to whom he was talking fell dead at his feet through being struck on the head by a piece of shrapnel".
 
He was promoted to Second Lieutenant and was wounded by a bomb in the Somme and later died of his wounds on Saturday 22nd July 1916 at aged 24 at General Hospital France. He was buried at Calais Cemetery, Calais, France.
 
Gilbert's name is recorded on the Kingston upon Hull War Memorial 1914 - 1918, the Hull Methodist Church (WW1 & WW2) and the Hull Grammar School (WW1) in his memory.
